High-Protein Baked Artichoke Dip Ingredients

artichoke hearts – The recipe calls for one standard 14-ounce can of artichoke hearts, drained but not rinsed. You can use frozen or raw artichoke hearts if you prefer.

If substituting frozen artichokes, thaw them completely and squeeze out excess water. Raw artichokes should be chopped and boiled or steamed before use.

spinach – You’ll need 1 cup of frozen spinach or kale, or 1 cup of cooked fresh spinach (start with 2 cups of raw spinach). After measuring, squeeze out excess moisture to avoid spreading watery artichokes.

For those who want the artichoke sauce without the spinach, feel free to omit the green vegetables.

Cheese – Add 2/3 cup grated Parmesan or vegan Parmesan. I also love using nutritional yeast as a cheese-free option.

yogurt – Replace high-fat mayonnaise with 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt or dairy-free Greek yogurt. Readers have written to tell me that cheese works too.

spices – Season with salt and garlic powder. If you like hot sauce, add a little crushed red pepper flakes or ground cayenne pepper.

How to make healthy artichoke sauce with spinach

  1. If you’re going to bake the recipe, start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, or 177 degrees Celsius.
  2. Measure all your ingredients, and drain but do not rinse the artichoke hearts.
  3. Squeeze excess moisture from the spinach with a cloth or paper towels. Then finely chop the spinach and artichokes.
  4. In a safe bowl or dish over medium heat, combine the chopped vegetables with the yogurt, salt, garlic powder, Parmesan cheese, or nutritional yeast. Stir until well mixed.
  5. Enjoy immediately as a cold dip, or skip to the baking step below.
  6. To prepare the oven-baked spinach artichoke sauce, cook it on the middle rack of the preheated oven for twenty minutes or until hot and lightly browned on top. Or microwave for five minutes or until evenly heated, stirring halfway through.
  7. Alternatively, you can prepare the recipe in a crock pot. Add everything to your slow cooker and heat on high for one and a half to two hours (or on low for about three hours), until hot and bubbly.
  8. Serve the dip hot from the oven, topping with chopped jalapeños or crushed red pepper flakes if desired.
  9. If you somehow find yourself with leftovers at the end of the night, store them in a covered, airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.

Service suggestions

Delicious, healthy appetizers are also fun to serve warm or cold.

It’s easy to transport and can be left on the counter for a few hours, making it a great recipe for game day gatherings, dinner parties, or brunch.

Foods that go well with dipping include pita bread or tortilla chips, a toasted baguette, or a tray of crunchy vegetables with raw bell peppers, celery, carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower.

If you want to get really fancy, serve the healthy sauce in a bread bowl alongside whole grain crackers, cherry tomatoes, or your favorite dip. Or use it as a topping for pizza or sandwiches.

Trust me, no one will ever pass up an opportunity to eat artichoke dip from Costco or Trader Joe’s.

Does it taste like a packaged artichoke spread?

This healthy artichoke appetizer or side dish can really hold its own at a party, and many guests will never guess it’s good for you!

The first time I made the recipe a few months ago, I made it for a big family event and didn’t mention its health benefits.

The entire bowl was gone by the end of the night, with several people commenting while eating that they loved the artichoke sauce.

When she revealed the secret, everyone was surprised. I got many requests for the recipe. People were particularly happy with the high protein and low calorie count.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say they taste exactly like store-bought artichokes or a homemade version loaded with cream cheese and mayonnaise. But it’s absolutely delicious.
