Homemade blue cheese sauce recipe

This homemade blue cheese sauce recipe is so much better than the store-bought one! Creamy, thick, and tangy, it’s a delicious sauce or salad dressing.

Check out my favorite blue cheese dressing recipe! Easy to make with 9 simple ingredients, they’re creamy, refreshing, and filled with delicate blue cheese crumbles.

I’ve been getting requests for a blue cheese dressing recipe ever since I shared these buffalo cauliflower wings a few years ago. After testing and adjusting this product with different ratios of mayonnaise, yogurt, and sour cream, I’m happy to report that it works perfectly as a dip for wings or veggies. With the addition of a little buttermilk (or regular milk), it becomes a delicious salad dressing that’s also pourable.

I’ve never been a fan of store-bought blue cheese sauces, they’re always too funky or too salty for my taste. But this homemade version couldn’t be more delicious. It’s bright and complex, with a subtle earthy touch from the cheese. I’ve surprised myself at the number of times I’ve done this lately. I hope you love it too!

How to make blue cheese sauce

This marinade recipe starts with 9 simple ingredients:

  • blue cheese, naturally! I often make this sauce with pre-crumbled blue cheese, usually labeled “crumbled blue cheese” in grocery stores. You can also buy a creamy blue cheese such as Gorgonzola or Roquefort and crumble it yourself.
  • Sour cream and mayonnaise – They create a creamy base for the sauce. If you don’t have sour cream, feel free to substitute full-fat Greek yogurt.
  • Distilled white vinegar and fresh lemon juice -For a refreshing flavour. Vinegar adds a sharper flavour, while lemon juice adds an acidic flavour.
  • Dried dill and garlic powder – To get a delicious flavour.
  • sugar Its sweetness is balanced between vinegar and refreshing lemon.
  • Yogurt – To soften the sauce to the desired consistency. Don’t have anything on hand? Feel free to substitute regular milk or water, the sauce will be a little less flavourful, but still delicious.
  • And salt and pepper – To make all the flavors pop!

Recipe advice

The final texture is up to you. I don’t include a measurement for the milk so that you have complete control over the final texture of the sauce. Add less (or none) for a thick, creamy sauce and more for a drizzle.

How to use blue cheese sauce

This sauce is a wonderful dip. Chicken wings + blue cheese sauce are a classic game day dish, and I love them paired with buffalo cauliflower wings or air fryer cauliflower for a fun vegetarian twist. It’s great with crunchy vegetables like celery sticks and carrots, too.

It’s also a delicious salad dressing. Try it on a traditional wedge salad or any salad that contains crunchy lettuce such as romaine or iceberg lettuce.

You can also use it as a sauce for sandwiches, burgers, and tacos. Try it on these veggie burgers or these cauliflower and buffalo tacos!
